At the Edge of Silence – May 8 on Teufelsberg

Date:
May 8, 2025

On Teufelsberg, the forest remains silent. Only the wind whispers through the shattered radome, and beneath the visitors’ feet, rubble crunches — fragments of Berlin, fragments of decisions, fragments of a past century. On May 8, the day of capitulation, 1945 marks not only the end of a war but the beginning of an experiment: a new order. Teufelsberg, today a memorial, a viewpoint, a cultural venue, and a think tank for the future, became a secret nerve center of the Cold War.

Teufelsberg is part of this story. Created from over 75 million cubic meters of rubble, it grew into a place that would later stand at the heart of Cold War tensions: hidden, monitored, politically charged. The Americans built one of NATO’s most important listening stations on this artificial hill — a silent ear in the midst of a divided world.

May 8 marks not only an ending but also a beginning. From the ruins emerged a new political, economic, and technological order, whose consequences are still felt today.
Teufelsberg is a place where these fractures and new beginnings converge: rubble and technology, defeat and hope, past and present.

Since October 2024, our exhibition “Declassified – The Secret of Teufelsberg” has provided insights into this unique history. In the corridors of the former listening station, it tells stories of espionage and ideologies, of control and freedom — while the street art, with its political and artistic imagery covering the exterior walls, stands as a testament to resilience and renewal — showing how a pile of ruins became a positive symbol of global transformation.

On May 8, Teufelsberg stands as a reminder of the fragility of peace and the complexity of new beginnings. A place where history is not only preserved but also questioned — and where the future is actively shaped.
