BangaloREsidency-Expanded: Our First Street Art Residency – Anpu Varkey @ Teufelsberg

We are excited to announce the first artist selected for the bangaloREsidency-Expanded at Teufelsberg: Anpu Varkey, an acclaimed muralist from India, will be in residence for six weeks between June and August 2025.

Teufelsberg as Host of the BangaloREsidency-Expanded

We are proud to serve as the Berlin host for the bangaloREsidency-Expanded, providing a space where artistic exchange meets historical resonance. This residency offers emerging artists from India the opportunity to immerse themselves in Berlin’s vibrant creative scene and contribute to the evolving artistic narrative of Teufelsberg.

The Artist: Anpu Varkey

Anpu Varkey has been creating large-scale public murals across India and internationally for over a decade. Her artistic journey began with the Extension Khirkee project and continued with the co-organization of street art festivals in Delhi and Mumbai. She curated major projects for the Kochi Muziris Biennale in 2012 and 2014, and her most recent work at the Guru Dronacharya metro station in Gurgaon spans an impressive 24,000 square feet.

During her residency at Teufelsberg, she is exploring the site’s layered history – from Cold War surveillance post to open-air art gallery. Through conversations and interactions, she aims to capture this transformation artistically.

A Living Canvas for History and Innovation

The raw, urban terrain of Teufelsberg offers ideal conditions for artistic experimentation, especially in street art. The residency invites artists to reflect on the site’s complex past and create bold visual statements that link historical context with contemporary themes.

Fostering Sustainable Artistic Exchange

Aligned with the mission of the bangaloREsidency-Expanded, the program encourages intercultural dialogue and collaboration. Participating artists gain access to Berlin’s dynamic art networks, explore new media and techniques, and bring fresh perspectives to Teufelsberg as a space of global artistic exchange.

Engagement Beyond the Walls

The residency goes beyond the creation of artworks. Artists are invited to engage with Berlin’s creative communities and Teufelsberg’s visitors through workshops, live painting sessions, and storytelling events—fostering deeper understanding and appreciation of the site’s cultural and artistic layers.

Teufelsberg is not just a backdrop—it is an active part of this residency, shaped by each artist’s vision and continuing its role as a space of transformation, creativity, and Berlin spirit.
