Cultural Bridges at Teufelsberg – Indian Street Artist Anpu Varkey Creates a Monument of Connection in Berlin

The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan in Bangalore, India, a vibrant high-tech metropolis with a flourishingcreative scene, sent renowned Indian street artist Anpu Varkey to Berlin as part of the bangaloREsidency-Expanded programme. The centrepoint of the residency: the legendary Teufelsberg, now one of the world’s largest open-air street art galleries.

During her six-week stay (June–August 2025), Varkey created a large-scale mural that explores the history of Teufelsberg, its origin from the rubble of World War II, and its role as a place of cultural transformation.

This mural is inspired by the resilience and determination of the Trümmerfrauen (rubble women). Since Teufelsberg was built from Berlin’s ruins, it seemed fitting to establish a connection. It shows a woman breaking through a massive wall – a symbol of both our not-so-distant past and the barriers we continue to build today. Tear down walls!” explains the artist.

On July 24, 2025, we invite you to the exhibition by Anpu Varkey, the first bangaloREsidency-Expanded artist at Teufelsberg. The exhibition offers a first glimpse into her artistic exploration of the site and invites visitors to discover new perspectives on Teufelsberg.

Anpu Varkey is one of the most prominent voices in the Indian street art scene. Her works are internationally present and known for their powerful visual language in public spaces.

Teufelsberg Hosts the bangaloREsidency-Expanded

An Indian artist brings her unique cultural sensibility to bear on a particularly poignant remnant of German history: Teufelsberg. The result is a powerful mural, inviting collective reflection. Anpu’s project is an ideal example of the goals of our artist-in-residence programme, contributing to greater understanding through artistic exchange, reaching far beyond borders. We are truly delighted with the first-ever bangaloREsidency-Expanded at Teufelsberg!” says Dr. Michael Heinst, Director,  Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore, India.

This residency fosters intercultural dialogue between India and Germany, blending artistic expression with historical depth. Dr. Stefanie Reichelt, Head of Teufelsberg development and herself a former bangaloREsidency artist in Bangalore, describes the project as “a living canvas for history and innovation.
